Use the plugin for the right purpose
The official plugin guidance describes reading local configuration and exposing values to the Android build. This can reduce accidental Git commits and make environment-specific setup clearer.
The plugin ID is com.google.android.libraries.mapsplatform.secrets-gradle-plugin; search build files and version-control history for that exact string.
A key included in a manifest, resource or generated constant can still be extracted from the distributed application. Do not put privileged backend credentials into the client simply because they came from an ignored properties file.
Separate configuration classes
| Value | Handling direction |
|---|---|
| Client API key designed for an app | Apply provider-supported app/API restrictions |
| Local development endpoint | Keep environment-specific and out of release where unnecessary |
| Backend administrative secret | Keep on the server or approved build infrastructure |
| Signing password or upload token | Use protected build secrets, never package into the app |
Avoid naming every configuration value “secret”; the actual authority it grants determines the risk.
Make missing values fail clearly
Provide safe development defaults only where they cannot accidentally point a release at the wrong service. For required release configuration, fail the build with a clear message rather than silently inserting an empty key or a test project identifier.
Do not print full values in Gradle logs when diagnosing a missing property.
Restrict and test client keys
Use the provider's supported restrictions, such as package/signing identity and allowed APIs where applicable. Test the actual Play-signed release identity, not only the local debug certificate. A valid key with the wrong restrictions can work in one distribution channel and fail in another.
Inspect the final package
APKLint can help identify key-like values and manifest configuration. Its scanner cannot establish whether a provider's server-side restrictions are correct. Follow Android security guidance, review the cloud-side configuration and treat a leaked privileged credential as a rotation incident, not merely a string to remove from the next APK.
Distinguish the plugin ID from its dependency coordinate
The plugin ID is com.google.android.libraries.mapsplatform.secrets-gradle-plugin. In the buildscript installation example reviewed on 29 September 2026, the complete dependency coordinate is com.google.android.libraries.mapsplatform.secrets-gradle-plugin:secrets-gradle-plugin:2.0.1. The group, artifact and version belong to dependency resolution; the plugin ID belongs to application of the plugin.
Follow the official installation guide for the build style used by the project. Avoid combining unrelated installation snippets until it is unclear which version Gradle resolves. Record the chosen version centrally and keep the app-module application explicit.
Build once without a developer's local configuration
Use a clean authorized checkout with no personal properties file. Verify that the project either uses a clearly non-production development default or fails with an actionable missing-configuration message. Then supply the intended value through the approved local or CI configuration and rebuild. A successful build only on one developer's laptop is evidence that an implicit dependency remains.
Inspect the generated manifest metadata in the built variant without printing the full key into shared logs. Confirm that the placeholder resolved and that the development and release variants do not unintentionally share the wrong project configuration. The plugin transfers configuration into the build; it does not make the resulting client key secret from a person inspecting the APK.
Review Maps application and API restrictions for the delivered package and signing identity. Test the release distribution path separately from debug. A key restricted to a local debug certificate can produce a working development map and a failing store-installed map without any plugin defect.
When rotating a permitted client key, track which supported app versions still contain the older value and plan the provider-side change accordingly. For a privileged secret accidentally packaged through the same mechanism, use a revocation and server-side redesign response instead. The build plugin cannot change the authority a value grants after it has been distributed.
