Firebase App Check in React Native: Native Configuration Still Matters

React Native App Check spans JavaScript, native Android configuration and backend enforcement. A JavaScript package installation can succeed while the Android build still uses the wrong Firebase app or an unintended debug provider.

Use the package's actual integration guide

The React Native Firebase App Check documentation is the primary integration reference for that package. It is not the same API surface as the Firebase web SDK, so do not mix their examples.

Confirm native dependencies, Google services configuration, package identity and release signing before diagnosing JavaScript-level failures.

Initialize before network consumers

App Check activation must precede protected Firebase operations. Review application startup code, background handlers and modules that perform requests at import or initialization time.

A component-level setup that runs only after the first screen mounts may be too late for a repository initialized earlier.

Separate provider setup from enforcement

Layer Evidence needed
Native Android provider Correct registration and successful token acquisition
JavaScript integration Requests use the initialized app/provider
Firebase service Enforcement configured for the intended product
Custom backend Token verification implemented server-side

The Firebase App Check overview describes the product boundary. It does not remove the need for user authentication or resource authorization.

Test release and development independently

Development tokens should be restricted to controlled environments. A release that accidentally uses a debug provider can appear functional while weakening the intended protection.

Install the actual Play-delivered test build when Play signing or licensing signals matter. Keep the Firebase app and certificate configuration aligned with that distribution path.

Roll out with observability

Measure verified, invalid and missing-token traffic where the product provides those metrics. Review failures by app version and device context before enforcing broadly.

APKLint can inspect packaged Firebase configuration and Android metadata, but it cannot execute your React Native startup sequence or verify server enforcement. Retain a release test showing a valid request accepted and a deliberately invalid request rejected without disabling normal authentication checks.

Initialize once before JavaScript consumers start

In a React Native application, identify the module that owns Firebase startup and make protected service consumers await that initialization. A request triggered at module import time can run before a screen's effect installs App Check. Move such work behind an explicit readiness boundary and return a typed recoverable failure when initialization cannot complete, rather than launching unbounded requests from repeated renders.

Use the API from the installed React Native Firebase App Check package. Its provider configuration and native integration differ from a browser Firebase example. Pin the package version and consult the matching documentation when upgrading, especially where namespaced and modular APIs differ. Do not mix both styles casually in a single startup path.

Check the native artifact after integration changes

Adding or changing a native Firebase module requires verification of the rebuilt Android artifact. A refreshed JavaScript bundle alone does not prove the native dependency and configuration were included. Build the intended variant, inspect its package and Firebase app identity, and run the provider flow through the actual distribution path. Keep the delivered signing identity separate from the upload credential.

For a controlled test, launch the app cold and invoke a single protected read after readiness. Then simulate an initialization failure and confirm that the UI reports it without sending a successful-looking empty result. Exercise any background handler that uses protected services independently, because it may not mount the foreground component responsible for setup.

In the test project, compare a valid application request, a missing or invalid app-token request, and a valid app-token request with insufficient user authorization. Record which layer rejects each case. A custom API must verify the token server-side; merely acquiring it in JavaScript does not protect an endpoint that ignores it. During enforcement rollout, inspect request outcomes by supported app version and channel. Remove obsolete development exceptions and confirm that release configuration selects the intended provider. Preserve this evidence with the package upgrade so future native dependency changes can be checked against a known initialization and authorization contract.
